Position Purpose:
This position exists for the two-fold purpose of designing and creating costumes for Concordia University’s Theatre Department activities, and extending the students’ knowledge and experience in the costume shop.  This role requires a high level of communication and coordination of people and activities, including experience in planning, follow through, and managing students and materials.   This is a part-time role with no benefits.  Must be at least 19 years of age to apply.

Responsibilities:
Collaborates and communicates with the Director of Theatre, show directors, designers, and other creatives to design, create, and/or obtain (buy/rent/borrow) costumes (and, ideally, assist with makeup and hair needs) for 2-3 mainstage shows, and to support other student-directed productions.
Helps manage and train a crew of students, with assistance from student shop employees.
Works alongside student workers to construct and alter costumes that meet production, safety, and quality expectations.
Creates and/or obtains (buy/rent/borrow) costumes, and maintains costume and makeup shop inventory (including equipment and supplies) that meet budget expectations, including creating and coordinating the costume production calendar, shop scheduling, inventory management, and shop and storage maintenance.
Maintains materials inventory and machinery/tool functionality.
Communicates with interested parties to secure stock costume items for rent and to arrange rental returns and any necessary payments.
Assists the Costume and Makeup Design course by teaching class students about costume shop (and makeup room) tools and techniques and monitoring required lab hours.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education-
BA or BFA in theatre or other clothing/fashion-related field

Experience-
Minimum of two years of experience in theatre setting.
Supervisor experience
Proficiency with tools, equipment, and materials necessary for constructing apparel structures, including fabrics and sewing/serger machines.
Training workers (including students) to use costume tools and fabrics, and to work on individual and group construction projects.
Familiarity with clothing/fashion styles, history, and patterns.
Familiarity with costume construction for theatre preferred.
Familiarity with makeup application for theatre preferred.
Knowledge of safety and OSHA standards.
Collaborating and communicating details to other theatre staff at production meetings desired.
Ability to demonstrate high levels of tact and ownership in a dynamic, challenging setting, including the capacity to anticipate needs before they arise.
A self-starter in forming systems of coordination.
Has a humble and teachable demeanor.
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Proficiency with budgets desired.

Some shop equipment and tasks are highly technical, and can be dangerous to self and others if not trained on or handled properly.
