Overview

The Preschool and Childcare Director leads, manages and ensures a high-quality early childhood education program that promotes the development of each child’s spiritual, physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development, in a nurturing, Christ-like environment; models exemplary professionalism and work ethic; always ensures safety and supervision of children, with a daily focus on Jesus Christ.

Reports to: Director of Ministries/Senior Pastor
Employment Status: Exempt, Full-Time
Hours: Varied hours, Monday – Friday 6:30 am-5:30 pm, occasional weekends as needed
Compensation: Salaried, commensurate with experience

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Main Duty – Engage, Equip, and Evangelize
·         A deep commitment to leading and building systems to ensure services are near or at capacity to maximize the number of children and their families who hear the Gospel and are discipled into the Christian faith. This may include expanding/decreasing licensed rooms and staff
·         Complete an annual Ministry Action Plan of responsibilities under the direction of the supervisor
·         Actively support, implement, and execute the church wide vision
·         Monitor and approve the religious curriculum and instruction to ensure sound teaching in harmony with the Bible and the Christian faith as exhibited in the Lutheran Confessions
·         Promote an atmosphere of Christian love and teamwork among the preschool/childcare staff, between the preschool/childcare staff and other Divine Shepherd staff, between the preschool/childcare and the parents; and between the preschool/childcare and the congregation
·         Market and promote the ministry, seeking to maximize enrollment
·         Substitute in the classrooms as needed

Main Duty – Encourage
·         Exemplify a positive attitude and upbeat demeanor in person and telephone, while demonstrating confidentiality, flexibility, approachability, and objectivity to children, parents, vendors, and coworkers
·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills, refrain from gossip. Honest, open, and transparent communications encouraged. Demonstrate the social skills necessary to relate to a variety of people, remaining positive even in stressful situations
·         Serve as an example of one with a mature Christian faith and conduct

Main Duty – Evaluate and Manage
·         Oversee the day-to-day operation and management. Incorporate common biblical and business sense in the decision making and problem-solving processes. Seek and apply guidance from supervisor and the Director of Finance and Operations regarding administrative and human resources duties that arise beyond scope of authority
·         Organize and complete annual planning well in advance of deadlines in collaboration with other staff
·         Manage time and prioritize tasks with minimal assistance to meet deadlines in a timely manner
·         Strive for excellence; set a daily intention to be the best in the position
·         Develop an annual budget proposal and manage expenses to stay within the approved annual budget
·         Ensure the ministry is compliant with all federal, state, and local regulations as well as with Divine Shepherd policies
·         Ensure that Divine Shepherd policies regarding safety are followed, especially those which are designed to prevent, report, or respond to abuse of children
·         Manage and supervise the assistant director(s), teachers, food service coordinator and other employees
·         Supervise and support all leaders, teachers, and volunteers as they serve in the ministry
·         Onboard and offboard staff, working in communication with the Director of Ministries Pastor and Director of Finance and Operations
·         Manage the level of daily staffing to provide quality and safe care and instruction while practicing good stewardship of financial resources
·         Maintain accurate records on children enrolled in the program, including but not limited to their development, attendance, and immunizations
·         Promote consistent, clear, and timely communication from the preschool and childcare to its constituents, including parents and the congregation
·         Ensure timely and accurate billing to parents
·         Regularly evaluate and provide feedback to staff, including an annual written performance review for each employee

QUALIFICATIONS

·         Committed follower of Jesus Christ with strong support for the Statement of Faith and employee Lifestyle Agreement
·         Active member of Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, or willing to become a member strongly preferred
·         Prefer degree (Masters, Bachelors, or Associates) in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Child and Family Studies or related field
·         Early childhood endorsement strongly preferred
·         At least five years of experience working in a preschool and/or daycare preferred
·         At least two years of experience in leadership of a preschool and/or childcare preferred
·         Proficiency in ProCare software, Planning Center, Microsoft applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.), Google Suite and experience with accounting and database programs. Must be computer literate and demonstrate the capacity to understand financial duties
·         Strong verbal and written communication skills
·         Ability to adapt and work efficiently in a rapidly changing environment with deadline pressures
·         A philosophy of mission and ministry that is consistent with the Director of Ministries

PHYSICAL/MENTAL FUNCTIONS

Definitions are based on 8 hours per day:

Continually 70-100%; Regularly 50-70%; Periodically 20-50%; Rarely 20% or less

·         Rarely endures persistent standing and walking.
·         Continually required to use hands, fingers, and wrist to operate office equipment and computers.
·         Regularly reach with hands and arms.
·         Continually required to speak and listen.
·         Periodically lifting supplies and materials that weigh up to 20 pounds.
·         Sensory Demands: Continually long hours in intense concentration, and long hours on the computer managing center information which requires attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.
·         Continually utilize specific vision abilities required to perform the job’s essential functions: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
·         Mental Demands: Regularly works under pressure meeting project schedules and budget guidelines.
·         Environmental Conditions: Continually works in busy, open office and is faced with constant interruptions and must meet with others on regular basis.
