Faribault Lutheran School is seeking a part-time music teacher for the upcoming school year. Faribault Lutheran School is a non-profit, K-8 Lutheran school located in Faribault, Minnesota. Our mission at FLS is to empower and equip all students for Christian discipleship and academic success in serving others for Christ and His church.

Job purpose

At our Lutheran school, we aim to spark a love for music in every student as a vital part of our culture. We teach vocal and instrumental expression techniques, nurture musical talents, and foster skills in listening to and reading music. Your duties may involve leading group musical activities, offering one-on-one instruction, suggesting activities for skill enhancement, and keeping track of student progress.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide instruction and support to students or groups of students while creating a positive learning environment.
  • Teach music appreciation, harmony, and instrumental or choral music to students, adapting instruction to their needs.
  • Teach both contemporary and traditional Christian music and hymns.
  • Coordinate and lead all school musical performances including but not limited to: Christmas service, FLS Sundays, Spring Musical and more.
  • Plan and organize class time efficiently for preparation, rehearsal, and instruction.
  • Maintain instruments, control storage, and ensure a positive learning environment.
  • Select appropriate music and teaching materials, and manage inventory.
  • Collaborate with other staff to address student needs and support school productions.
  • Lead students in instrument instruction, music theory, and appreciation across various genres.
  • Oversee specialty choirs and assist with musical needs for theatrical performances.
  • Assess and track student progress.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff for curriculum and student development.
  • Seeks out additional funding and grant opportunities for musical instruction and opportunities for students.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Administrator.
  • Dedicate teaching to the mission of FLS, focusing on empowering students for Christian discipleship and academic success, and serving others for Christ in his Church.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to play at least one instrument, the ability to sing, and the ability to direct musical groups.
  • Work effectively and positively with students, teachers, and parents.
  • Comfort in sharing Christian religious faith with students.
  • Strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Highly self-motivated.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Education and Experience Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in music education or music theory, with knowledge of traditional hymns, contemporary Christian music, and other Christian-based musical programming.
  • MN teaching licensure preferred, but not required.

Physical Job Requirements

  • The ability to stand, walk, ascend/descend stairs, talk to people, hear, and tolerate a moderate level of noise that is common in a school environment.
