CLASSROOM TEACHING JOB DESCRIPTION
MESSIAH LUTHERAN SCHOOL
OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA
A teacher desiring to teach at Messiah Lutheran School believes that children are a gift from God and that learning is primarily determined by their effort and use of effective strategies and that intelligence is not a fixed inborn limit on learning capacity.
Reports to: School Administrator
Qualifications:
· current Oklahoma Teacher Certification (or equivalent) in area(s) to be taught
· Current first aid and CPR certification
· Member in good standing of a local Christian Church
· Willing to take Messiah Lutheran Church membership/ information class if not current Lutheran Church Missouri Synod member
Spirituality Instruction is distinctively Christian.
· The teacher will “Make people wise unto salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.” (I Timothy 3:15)
· The Word of God (the Bible) is taught.
· The teacher daily leads the class in prayer and devotion.
· Christian education is integrated into all curricular disciplines.
· Worship and religious instruction is in accord with Lutheran Doctrine.
· Students are provided with opportunities to witness their faith regularly.
Basic Classroom Management The classroom provides an environment encouraging lifelong learners and followers of Christ.
· The teacher will maintain the attention of the students.
· The teacher is well organized to minimize loss of learning time.
· The teacher has a solid system of discipline.
· The teacher’s discipline is fair, firm, and consistent.
· The teacher has work procedures and housekeeping routines that are taught, trained, and tested for.
· The physical space is conductive to good discipline as well as instructional objectives.
Instructional Strategies (Instructional clarity…setting the context and selecting explanatory devices, to the content and to the students.)
· The teacher will specifically communicate the objectives of a lesson.
· The teacher will specifically communicate the sequence of events.
· The teacher will specifically make connections for students.
· The teacher will specifically activate current knowledge.
· The teacher will have students specifically summarize and process information.
· The teacher will evaluate students effectively, fairly, and in positive terms.
Clarity Teachers match instruction to the conceptual understanding of their students.
· The teacher will anticipate student confusion.
· The teacher will use a variety of explanatory devices.
· The teacher will check for understanding.
· The teacher will unscramble confusion once it has been identified.
· The teacher will communicate clearly.
· Lesson plans will be detailed enough for another teacher or substitute to step in and follow them if needed.
Motivation The teacher communicates high expectations and standards, builds relationships with students, parents and other faculty members and also establishes a healthy classroom climate.
· The teacher will build mutual feelings of regard and respect with students, parents and other staff.
· The teacher will send messages of confidence & belief to students.
· The teacher will create a healthy climate for learning where there is cooperation, self-discipline, and respect.
Curriculum Planning The quality of the teacher’s planning meets and exceeds Oklahoma State Department stadnards.
· The teacher will incorporate several levels of thinking through objectives.
· Student learning will be evaluated and assessed to aide in quarterly report cards. Assessments may occur more frequently if necessary.
· A variety of learning styles will be used to meet the varying learning needs of students.
· Curriculum will be designed so it has continuity, sequence, and integration.
· Oklahoma PASS skills will be met and exceeded through the course of a year of instruction.
NON-TEACHING AREAS OF PERFORMANCE
Spiritual Growth Does the teacher model a Christian life?
· The teacher will actively participate in faculty Devotions.
· The teacher will firmly adhere to the teaching of the church, as described in the Christian scriptures, Lutheran confessions, and the applicable resolutions of the LCMS in convention, in matters of religious faith.
· The teacher will lead a life that does not violate the teaching and beliefs of the Missouri Synod on matters of personal conduct.
· The teacher will actively participate in worship
Constant learning The teacher is a lifelong learner.
· The teacher will demonstrate the characteristics of a reflective learner.
· The teacher will practice change and experimentation.
· The teacher will attempt to keep current in the teaching field.
· The teacher will attend professional development and/or growth opportunities when provided for by Messiah Lutheran School.
Communication The quality and quantity of the teacher’s communication with parents and community is reflective of their professional status.
· The teacher will communicate with parents.
· The teacher will plan and carry out high quality conferences & presentations.
· The teacher will carry out high quality student reporting.
Routine Administrative Duties The classroom is enriched by routine duties managing the facets expected of an educator.
· The teacher will carry out routine management duties in a timely fashion.
· The teacher will show high quality record keeping and paperwork completed in a timely manner.
· The teacher will consistently carry out school policy.
· The teacher will effectively use school support staff (school secretary, teacher aids, substitute teachers, etc.)
· The teacher will meet established deadlines.
Contribution as a member of the Staff Teachers provide a Christ-centered education with academic excellence to empower every child to be a lifelong learner and follower of Christ.
· The teacher will have high quality collegial relationships with peers and act as a team player.
· The teacher will practice honest, open communication.
· The teacher will fulfill responsibilities in meetings.
· The teacher will plan with other staff members using the same classroom to assure maximum benefit of the facilities.
· The teacher will fulfill other, non-teaching, responsibilities as warranted or assigned, including but not limited to lunch room supervision, recess supervision, car pick up, and occasional after school/ evening activities.
